Pollarding vs Coppicing

Pollarding and coppicing each achieve a different goal but utilise similar methods. Both involve tree pruning which results in more robust tree growth.

Coppicing is a traditional woodland management method used to prune young trees down to the ground down into a small living stump that
re-grows and develops into new stems. Coppicing can increase the lifespan of a tree for a long time. This means that a tree can carry on in its important role as a habitat for the wildlife that depend on it for survival.

Pollarding is a procedure undertaken for safety reasons to manage tree heights and prevent them from touching electrical wires for example. Tree pollarding focuses on the upper branches of a tree and these are cut at the head which encourages a denser head of foliage to grow.

We use high-grade industry standard tools and techniques to achieve the best results possible while minimising disruption and damage to the surrounding environment.

Benefits of Pollarding and Coppicing

Supercharges Growth

Coppicing and pollarding are effective methods of super-charging tree growth to produce more wood for commercial use, such as for fence post production, ship-building and as a sustainable energy source via wood burning. Domestically, garden trees can be stimulated to grow faster and in a natural way so it avoids the use of chemicals and fertilisers.

Benefits Wildlife & Plantlife Below

Because these processes allow trees more light and rain to pass through, it means that the wildlife and plant life below can benefit and have the opportunity to flourish. These methods have been employed to diversify woodland areas successfully and encourages animals and wildlife to use it as their habitat.

Increases Lifespan and Reduces Damage to the Tree

Both procedures encourage a tree to produce new shoots, this increases a trees overall lifespan and vitality.
